  1. Avoid alcohol. A protruding stomach is not called a beer belly for nothing! Studies have shown a relationship between heavy drinking and a large waist-to-hip ratio. People who have three or more alcoholic drinks per day tend to have larger bellies than those who drink less. Cutting back on your alcohol consumption may be essential to your losing belly fat.
  2. Quit smoking. Smokers tend to have larger bellies than those who do not smoke.
  3. Eat a low-fat diet. While you cannot spot-reduce, losing a few pounds will help. Some of that weight will come from your mid-section.
  4. Exercise in vigorous bursts. To get rid of belly fat, exercise must be vigorous enough to set off a release of adrenaline. This is necessary to free the fat for use as fuel. Brisk walking can work, or perhaps dancing.
  5. Follow the vigorous burst of exercise with a prolonged aerobic activity, such as walking, to burn off the freed up fat.
  6. Alternate periods of intense activity with prolonged aerobic activity at a comfortable pace. This kind of interval training is the best way to burn stomach fat.
  7. Tone your abdominal muscles. As your fat is burned off, these muscles are revealed. Exercising the abs everyday will help flatten your tummy. Crunches are one of the best exercises you can do to tighten your midriff.
  8. Stand up straight. Perfect posture will help pull your tummy in and make you look slimmer. Practice lifting the top of your head toward the ceiling, gently pulling your shoulders up and back, lifting your rib cage up out of your hips and pulling in your tummy muscles. You will look thinner, your clothes will fit better and you will feel more energetic.
