How To Prevent or Heal Osteoporosis

Women in the U.S. are diagnosed with bone problems, first osteopenia and then osteoporosis, more than in any other country in the world. Most doctors recommend bisphosphonate drugs, but there are many easy non-drug alternatives that can make your bones much stronger with no side effects.
  1. First there are some things you will have to give up - sodas and dairy. Sodas, whether diet or regular, are bone destroyers. Studies have shown that drinking even one soda a day will have lasting negative effects on your bones. Although people are used to believing that milk has calcium and is therefore good for your bones, this is not true. Countries that use dairy have much more osteoporosis than those that don't. This is because magnesium is needed to push the calcium into the bones and should be absorbed in a 1:1 ration. Milk has 9 times as much calcium as magnesium, so it upsets the balance and the calcium gets stored in your joints or other uncomfortable places.
  2. Add raw, preferably organic, greens into your diet. The calcium in green vegetables is excellent for bone health and you would benefit from having raw juices or salads every day.
  3. Take vitamin D3 for strong bones. You can get this in capsules but the best source is Carlson's Cod Liver Oil, which is flavored with lemon and very easy to take by the spoonful every day. All the processed foods that claim to have vitamin D added have the cheap, synthetic form of vitamin D2, which is no use to your bones. If you get enough sunlight on your body, then you don't need to take anything because your skin will make its own vitamin D. But it takes an hour or more on a large area of your body to make enough.
  4. Take calcium and magnesium separately in a 1:1 ratio. Most supplements will be more calcium than magnesium, so I take them separately. You can either take a liquid Angstrom Mineral product or there is a relatively new source of calcium on the market that is very well absorbed and shows up well in bone tests. It is microcrystalline calcium hydroxyapatitecompound (MCHC). It comes from cattle so I would rather be sure that it comes from New Zealand. I trust their farming practices. I recommend Now Foods microcrystalline calcium hydroxyapatite (it's very inexpensive from Iherbs.com). Magnesium citrate can be taken to bowel tolerance since magnesium helps your body in many ways and 80% of people in the US are low on magnesium.
  5. Take a strontium citrate supplement. Strontium was tested and found to create as much new bone as the dangerous drugs. It is a trace mineral and can be obtained cheaply from iherb.com. I use the Doctor's Best - Strontium Bone-Maker.
  6. Check your pH balance. By testing your first urine of the day with a pH measuring stick, you can find out if your body spent the night dragging calcium out of your bones to neutralize the acid in your system. If you eat processed foods or fast foods, which are acid forming in the system, or if you have an upsetting or stressful lifestyle, then your body remains acid. The acid would burn your organs if your body did not prioritize finding calcium to neutralize it. So if you find that you were acid the whole night through, then before bed take a drink of half a glass of water, juice of half a lemon, and 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda. It will fizz up like lemonade and taste ok and will allow your body to do all its healing and cleansing chores while you sleep.
  7. Exercise, exercise, exercise. This is so important. It is muscles attached to bone, pulling on them whenever you move, that convince your bone that it needs to grow stronger. The more you sit around, the more your muscles and bones will shrink away and disappear. It is weight-bearing exercise that is the best for building bone. Swimming and bike riding won't do it. There is something about your heels striking the floor that gets your bones' attention. An additional benefit can be found by wearing a weight vest that weighs up to 10% of your body weight while you exercise for one hour a day, five days a week. Research has shown that wearing the vest can build bone better than the drugs. You can find weight vests specially designed for women with osteopenia and osteoporosis.

How To Differentiate a Food Allergy from Food Intolerance and Food Sensitivity

Often food allergy, food intolerance and food sensitivity are confused. Even doctors tend to interchange these terms as they have food in common and treatment for each can be similar. They are very different and it is important to know which one you actually have.
  1. A food allergy is an anaphylactic immune response. It is usually severe, requires immediate medical attention, and is life-threatening. Early symptoms of an allergy include rash, swelling of the tongue, throat and face. Some of the most common food allergies are to peanut, shellfish, clams, egg, corn, wheat and milk.
  1. A food intolerance has several causes, depending on the intolerance. Milk or lactose intolerance is caused by the lack of an enzyme called lactase. Gluten intolerance (gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye, barley and oats) is caused by an antibody present in the intestines that attacks the gluten. Both can cause abdominal discomfort, bloating and diarrhea though with intolerances, symptoms can vary. Some people show no significant symptoms but in the case of a gluten intolerance, it is important to be diagnosed early to avoid severe damage to the intestines. It is hereditary and advisable to get tested if an immediate family member is diagnosed.
  1. A food sensitivity has been linked to many health problems including ADHD, hyperactivity, autism and many others. While how exactly these health problems are linked to foods is not known for certain, studies using the elimination method (eliminating certain foods from the diet) show improvement of symptoms. Some common foods to look into would be caffeine, chocolate, artificial colors or flavors, soy, casein (protein in milk), corn, and/or gluten, just to name a few.
If you suspect that you have a food allergy, food intolerance, or food sensitivity, it is advisable to see your doctor. There are many tests that can help you narrow down which of these food-related ailments you might have and the foods causing your symptoms.
One thing you can try on your own is an elimination diet. Try taking the offending food or foods out of your diet for a week. Try reintroducing the foods back one at a time, about one new food every five to seven days, and see what happens. It is also helpful to keep a food journal. Write down what you eat and how you feel as you eliminate and reintroduce foods.
For most food-related ailments, the treatment is to avoid the food entirely. Lactose intolerance is an exception and can be treated by taking an enzyme that aids in digestion. If you find that you have a food ailment, it is important to seek support. To completely avoid a food, you have to learn a lot about it in order to understand the benefits of eliminating it. Also, you can start feeling very isolated because you're afraid to get sick. You are not alone, and as time goes by, coping gets easier.

Treat Eczema Naturally: Natural Remedies and Treatment for Eczema

Eczema affects around 1% of the population, and symptoms vary from mild itching to severe inflammation and flaking of the skin. Eczema can also be embarrassing, as it tends to appear on the face and chest (although it can break out on other areas of the body, including the elbows, knees and back). Food allergies and stress can cause or exacerbate the condition. Fortunately, it is relatively easy to treat.
The mainstream approach to treating eczema usually includes cortisone and antibiotics. It’s wise to avoid antibiotics and cortisone whenever viable natural alternatives are available.
If you want to avoid mainstream treatments, there are a number of dietary and lifestyle changes you can make. Here are some suggestions for how to treat eczema the natural way:
  1. As unpleasant as this phase of your treatment for eczema may be, it is also the most important. Start with an elimination diet to test for certain foodstuffs, for example tomatoes. Eat ample amounts of tomatoes for a week to ten days, and monitor your skin closely. Then discontinue eating tomatoes for a week to ten days. If your skin shows a marked improvement, tomatoes may be causing or worsening your eczema. If there is no change, move on to the next item, such as wheat. Common allergens (ingredients that cause an allergic reaction) include: shellfish, cows' milk products (cheese, ice-cream, chocolate, etc.) eggs, soy, peanuts, wheat and even sugar.
  2. treating eczemaAnother natural treatment for eczema involves different types of oils. Natural oils have anti-inflammatory properties and are particularly good for the skin. Visit your local health store and pick up supplements of borage oil, fish oil OR primrose oil. Also increase your intake of Omega-6 rich foods, like olive oil, walnuts and oily fish, such as sardines and salmon.
  3. Reducing stress in your life has benefits beyond treating eczema, but it's easier said than done. Skin treatments through this method are challenging. Give yoga or meditation a try. One session of yoga a week can make a phenomenal difference to your mental state. If you find yourself stressing out because of bad traffic, change the radio from the rock channel to classical music. Get an iPod and load it with some of your favorite low-key music. Use it while you walk for 20 minutes in the evening after work, or while you work out at the gym. If you make de-stressing a priority in your life, you'll see the difference in your skin.
  4. Adding different supplements to your diet are considered natural remedies for eczema. Take zinc supplements (15mg per day). It plays an important role in both skin and hair health. Many people suffer a zinc deficiency because it's hard to get sufficient zinc in your diet. You should see a marked difference in your skin's condition within 1 - 2 months.
  5. Some of the more simple treatments for eczema involve your daily shower vs. bath routine. Simply said, shower rather than bathe. If you do bathe, make sure the water is not too hot, and make it as quick as you can.
  6. The next eczema natural treatment is paying attention to the fabric from which your clothes and bedding are made. Wear cotton pajamas and sleep between cotton sheets. In severe cases, you can try wearing gloves / socks on your hands at night, to prevent you from scratching your skin raw.
  7. Go outside and expose your skin to fresh air and sunshine - for SHORT periods of time. This is one of the eczema remedies that is simple if you don't overdo it and get burned; then you will have a whole new set of skin problems. In one study, a small amount of UV treatment helped 80% of people with skin conditions.
There is no cure-all for eczema, but a lot can be done to control the condition. Commit to the strategies above, and you'll soon see a difference.
