Four Moves To Be Aware Of If You Suffer From Back Pain

If you suffer from back pain, it's important you take caution when doing a number of exercises during a regular workout routine. While these exercises won't lead to back pain if they are done correctly, many individuals often make a few key errors that can send back pain soaring. If you're already prone, it can be very damaging to the existing injury.

Let's go over what these exercises are so you know to be extra careful...

1. Lying Leg Raises. The first is the lying leg raise. This move will put strain on your lower back if at any point you let your lower back lift off the floor.

Now, in order to keep your lower back on the floor, very strong abs are needed. So for this reason, beginners should just avoid this move, especially if back pain is a concern.

As you become stronger, then you can begin incorporating it in your workout. When you do, if you ever feel your lower back lift up, stop immediately and correct yourself.

2. Shoulder Press. Another move to be careful of is the shoulder press. The biggest mistake made here is allowing your lower back to sway. As soon as you let this happen, you'll have a high amount of total weight coming down on your lower back joints as you hoist the weight overhead.

The solution? Think of squeezing your abs and pulling up your hips. By doing so, you'll flatten your lower back, keeping your spinal column in proper alignment. This reduces the total amount of stress being placed on your lower back area.

3. Bent Over Rows. Bent over rows are another problematic exercise. These can be bad because if you let your lower back hunch over slightly, this will create excess strain on your spinal column as well. On the other hand, if you arch your back, you'll again be creating unnatural stress loading patterns.

Keeping your back flat is key. Try and watch yourself in a mirror the first few times you perform this exercise to ensure you are doing it correctly.

4. Deadlifts. Finally, deadlifts are the next move to be extra careful about. Never pull up using your back, but instead, think of squeezing through your glutes and hamstrings. This will help ensure you are using your muscles as you should during this exercise.

Given the amount of weight people lift with this movement, if you aren't careful, you can seriously strain your back joints.

So there you have some key points to know and remember about back pain and your workout program. Take caution. The last thing you want to do is make any pre-existing back injury any worse than it already is.

Should You Use An Activity Tracker?

If you've been keeping track of the latest products to hit the fitness scene, there's no question you've discovered one or two of the latest "fitness trackers" now available.

What are these and why are they so beneficial? People everywhere are jumping on the bandwagon, picking up their choice of device.

Let's give you a brief overview of what you should know...

1. What They Are? These fitness trackers are basically small devices you wear on your body and will determine various fitness statistics such as how many steps you've taken, how many hours you're sleeping, how many floors you've climbed, and an approximation of how many calories you've burned.

Each tracker will offer slightly different metrics, so shopping around to find one that offers what you want to know most will pay off.

2. Will They Work? The question you might be now asking yourself however, is how accurate are these? Can you really rely on them?

The answer is yes and no. In a sense, they can be relatively accurate. Most are proven within about +/- 10 to 20% depending on the device, so they can give you a general idea of about how many calories you are burning.

For step counts, they do tend to be very accurate as they are basically just a pedometer.

The main thing to know though is they will not accurately assess calorie burn during certain activities such as cycling or weight lifting since there's no way to assess the calorie burn here. Ones that actually read body chemistry and have metal plates that touch the skin, may be slightly more accurate in this regard, but they will never be 100%.

3. How To Use Them Effectively. So if you want to use these, go ahead. Use them as a guideline only though. Still make sure you count your calories and track your body weight. Adjust as necessary. The tracker is better used as a baseline for measuring more active days with less active ones.

For instance, use it to help you reach a certain step count goal - 5000 steps for example. If you notice you're only at 3000 by evening, get up and do something to make up for the more sedentary day.

This over time can help you reach your weight loss goals faster and improve your health standing. For many people, they serve as an excellent wake-up call to see just how little you're actually moving.

Exercises and Workouts - Try These If You're Bored With Regular Squats

As you move through your workout program, one exercise you absolutely must have in place is the squat. Few exercises are as beneficial as this "king" move as it's often called since it works so many muscle groups at once.

This said, after doing squat after squat after squat, boredom may set in. Like any other move in your workout routine, it's important you include sufficient variety over time.

Fortunately, there are a number of squat variations to be considered. Here are a few that you may want to try out at your next workout...

1. Sumo Squats. Want to firm those inner thighs? If so, the sumo squat is an exercise to consider. For this one, you simply stand with your feet slightly wider than shoulder width apart with your toes slightly turned out.

Squat down from there. You should feel the difference in the nature of stress being placed on the body almost immediately.

2. Front Squats. Moving along, next you can try front squats. If you are already squatting in a squat rack with a barbell, you'll be well equipped to transition into this one. Now, rather than placing the barbell across your back, you simply place it across the front of your body instead.

Lower down from there. Doing so is going to help to place more total stress on the quads versus the hamstrings when you do the traditional squat.

3. Jump Squat. For those who want to boost their speed and power, the jump squat is an excellent choice. This plyometric based move will not only build muscle, but burn massive calories as well.

Lower down into the squat and once you're there, rebound up off the ground coming up as high as you possibly can.

Upon landing, move right back down into the squat once again.

4. Goblet Squat. Finally, the last variation to consider is the goblet squat. This one works your upper body more than the basic squat, so is a full body move.

Simply hold a dumbbell with both hands directly in front of your chest in a vertical position. From there, with feet slightly wider than shoulder width, squat down until you're as low as you can go.

Exercises and Workouts - Four Balance Boosting Bosu Ball Moves

Whether you participate in some sort of team sport or you simply want to boost your overall balance and agility, making good use of the bosu ball is a wise move.

Many people don't quite understand what to be doing with this ball. They know how to use the full exercise ball, but this half-ball looking object escapes them. How can they benefit?

The following four exercises will show you how. Try these during your next workout and you'll soon see how helpful the bosu ball can be...

1. Push-Ups On The Bosu Ball. Placing your hands on the ball and doing a push-up from there is one of the best ways to bring your core into the picture more. As soon as you place the hands on the ball and feel the level of instability you're experiencing, you'll quickly notice why this exercise is so effective.

Your entire core region will contract hard to keep you balanced as you lower yourself down and back up again.

2. Squats On The Bosu Ball. Likewise, using the same principle, you can also do squats on this ball. Note when you first start doing these, do them without any weights to get used to the movement pattern.

Then, as you progress, you can add a barbell across your back if desired. Try and squat as low to the ground as possible. You should feel your calf muscles in particular working much harder than they were before as you performed the exercise.

3. V-Sit Hold On The Bosu Ball. The V-Sit hold on the ball is another smart move to consider. This one gives you great core muscle stimulation and will also help enhance your overall muscular endurance.

Simply sit down on top of the ball and then move into the "v"-sit position. Try and hold this for as long as possible. Don't get discouraged if you can only hold it for 10 seconds or so. Keep working at it and you'll soon see your times increasing.

4. Plank On The Bosu Ball. Finally, the last core move to consider doing on the ball is the standard plank. By placing your forearms on the ball, you'll get far less stability than you would on the ground, forcing your abs to contract harder.

If you want an advanced version of the usual plan, this should be your go-to.

So next time you're heading for the gym, grab the bosu ball and try these exercises. You'll soon seen how effective this ball can be.

Muscle Building Workouts

Muscles Building Workouts Muscle building workouts don't require expensive gym memberships or personal trainers. They do require a basic understanding of how to work out in order to build muscle tissue. Once you know the exercises, it is important to be consistent with them.
A good, over-all total muscle building workout should only take about 20 minutes, and be done 3-4 times each week. Allow a day in-between workouts for the muscles to rest and repair. Muscle building workouts are usually accomplished using weights, resistance bands or your own body weight.
Muscle is built as you repeat short, quick movements over and over. As muscles are consistently challenged, they build on themselves and increase in size. Walk with weights: The easiest method to begin muscle building is by combining hand weights on a walk. 3 or 5 pound weights work well for this. Your arms will become strengthened and toned as you walk simply by carrying a pair of weights on your morning walk.
Lunges: With one foot forward, one behind, gently hold 3 or 5 pound weights. Ease down slowly till the knee barely touches the ground and slowly rise back up. Repeat this movement 5 times. Switch foot positions and work the other side 6 times total. Repeat this pattern twice. Lunges strengthen the thigh muscles.
Squats: Separate feet shoulder width apart. Hold weights gently. Slowly squat down 6 times. Rest a moment, and then repeat. Squats work the thigh muscles. Arm Lifts: Hold weights gently, either 3 or 5 pounds. Lift arms slowly until parallel to the floor, and then stop. Slowly lower arms until at your sides again. Repeat 5 times. Sit ups: Lay on the floor, facing the ceiling. Lock arms behind head bend knees with your feet on the floor. Make a small lift motion in your upper body, without straining your neck until you feel it in the stomach. Repeat 11 times.
Push Ups: Lay face down on the floor. Place hands under shoulders, bend your knees. Slowly rise up to arm's length. Repeat 11 times. Leg Lifts: With the back of a chair in front of you to hold on to, separate feet shoulder width apart. Bend one knee and lift the foot, behind you. Now, lift your knee and foot behind until your leg is almost straight. Do this slowly, let it down and repeat 5 times. Switch to the other foot and repeat.
A consistent muscle building workout should show results in about 6 weeks.

How To Have Lower Ab Workouts

If flat lower abs are your dream, you need to tone the muscles and lose fat. Assuming you are trimming your waistline through diet and exercise, there are some things you can do to further tone and flatten the lower abs. The steps in this article will get you started on the track toward firm, muscular abs, but if you'r really serious, you need a serious program beyond what an article can provide.
  1. Start on your back with your legs extended. The natural curve of your lower back may be tense or cause your stomach to arch up. Practice tilting your pelvis so that your lower back is flat on the floor.
  2. Warm up with breathing exercises. While on your back, inhale and hold the breath for a count of five. As you inhale, your abs and chest should rise as air is brought into the lungs. Exhale slowly and tighten your abs. Repeat this breathing technique for ten breaths.
  3. Using your abdominal muscles, pull your legs in toward your center to do a lower crunch. Still on your back focus your mind on pulling your legs in without using your legs muscles or momentum. These will be tough when you first start but they will get easier. Exhale your breath as you pull the muscles in and keep your lower back flattened to the floor.
  4. Complete one set of 15 reps of lower crunches. Don’t work the muscles to failure. You should feel the tension but not pain so if you are new to these exercises, gradually build up to the first set.
  5. For the next exercise, you will practice controlled lowering of the legs. Start this exercise on your back with your legs raised straight into the air. Your body should form a ninety-degree angle. To the count of five, slowly lower your legs toward the ground. Keep your legs straight and don’t rest them to the ground at the bottom. Complete the move by returning your legs to the start position on a count of three. Repeat this exercise for 12 repetitions.
  6. Use the plank on a stability ball for the final exercise. Make sure the ball is inflated fully then so you are facing downward. Rest your elbows and forearms on the ball. Extend your legs out so that your body creates a straight line similar to a push-up stance. Hold the position for thirty seconds. Make sure you breathe and tighten your lower abs throughout this position.
  7. Repeat all three exercises for a second and third set. Beginners will be able to work up to a full set and then add the second and third. Remember, it takes patience to tone these muscles.
  8. Cool down with standing breathing and stretching. Stand up straight with your feel shoulder width apart. Tilt your pelvis so that your body is aligned then raise your arms above your head as you inhale. Stretch your fingers toward the ceiling and hold the breath for the count of three. Then slowly lower your arms as you exhale and relax. Repeat four times.
By adding these lower ab toners to your workout, you can flatten and tone your trouble area. Remember that you cannot tone your lower abs without burning off the fat with diet and exercise, and you cannot spot tone just one area. This workout should be tone in addition to a full ab routine that works your upper and oblique abs as well.

Ways to Lose Weight: Quick Fat Loss Workouts

Quick fat loss workouts are possible once you know how to put them together and learn how to burn fat. You don't need expensive personal trainers or gym memberships to achieve quick fat loss once you know just a few simple principles and exercises, and you can get started today. By combining two important forms of exercise, you will increase your health, stamina, and energy while decreasing your weight and size. (If you really want to lose fat quickly without cardio exercise, I recommend reading Turbulance Training, a fantastic book by a Men's Health expert.)
There are two basic forms of exercises to lose weight. Walking, or cardio workouts, and lifting weights are all you need for your workout program. The principle you want to remember here is to boost your metabolism and get it to burn calories faster and more efficiently. The more calories you burn, the faster you lose weight. Start with a walking program. One to two miles each workout is enough to get the body burning energy. Two miles can be walked at a brisk pace in around 30 minutes.
Just remember to keep it brisk and keep your heart rate up - this will keep the fat burning. Another principle of walking is interval training. This is simply alternating your pace of walking. Mix faster periods of walking in with slower speeds, and you have a good workout that will give you quick fat loss. Interval training can be as simple as one minute of fast for every five minutes of a slower pace. Keep it brisk, but notice the change in pace. The change is what boosts metabolism, allows you to burn fat faster, and it decreases the chances of you becoming bored with the workout.
Next is lifting weights. Muscle burns more calories than fat, so when you increase muscle in your body, you increase your metabolism and burn calories faster. Start with weights of 3, 5, and 10 pounds. Work with the 3 and 5 pound weights until it becomes easier, and then begin adding in the 10 pound weights. Do bicep curls by holding the 5 pound weights in your palms, and lift them to your chest. Twelve repetitions, done twice is enough to establish tone in as few as 4 weeks. Hold 3 or 5 pound weights, spread your feet, and squat down twelve times each for 2 periods, keeping your arms at your sides. Add twelve sit ups and twelve pushups, remembering to do each set twice, and you have a quick, efficient workout. Alternate the walking days with weight days. This gives your muscles a chance to recover in between, which is important in building strength and fat loss.
As you burn fat after walking for weight loss and strength training, you'll want to continue building your endurance with more intense cardio exercise. Jogging and running will make your workout program even more effective, and you lose body fat if you keep up your routine in the long term.

Eating Fruit & Yogurt After Workouts

Eating after a grueling workout is just as important as eating before it. Your muscles need fuel to recover glycogen stores that you burn during exercise. Eating helps exercisers keep their energy levels up after a strenuous workout. Fruits and yogurt are excellent foods to eat after a workout routine. Even if you're not hungry after exercising strenuously, eat at least a little food and rehydrate.

Dried Fruits, Apples and Oranges

  • Muscles have to recharge after a workout. Dried fruits contain carbohydrates that your body needs to refuel the muscles. Eating a 1/4-cup serving of dried fruits is a healthy snack after a strenuous workout. Making trail mix by adding a variety of nuts with the dried fruits is another healthy option. Other fruits that make healthy snacks post-workout are apples and oranges. In addition to helping your body refuel, these fruits have vitamins that your body uses to function properly. The advantage of eating dried fruits is convenience. They do not spoil as quickly as fresh fruits and are easier to pack for snacking. Dried fruits also provide your body with a ready source of energy, which is necessary after a strenuous workout.

Yogurt

  • Yogurt contains calcium and protein as well as vitamin D to help strengthen your bones. Stronger bones lower your risk of injury during exercise routines and provide better anchors for your muscles. Yogurt also contains B-vitamins, minerals and omega-3s. Eating yogurt after working out helps with muscle repair but also lowers the risk of heart disease. Avoid fatty foods after a workout because your body cannot easily absorb and digest them.

Yogurt and Fruits Together

  • Yogurt is low in fat but rich in protein and easy for your body to absorb post-workout, CanadianLiving.com notes. Yogurt also contains bacteria that aid in digestion. This means that eating yogurt together with fruits post-workout helps the body absorb nutrients more easily. This is particularly useful for people who want to build muscle because yogurt contains amino acids that help in muscle repair. Adding fruits to yogurt further enriches their nutritional content but also helps give your body a much-needed energy boost after a workout.

Timing

  • Eat within two hours after working out. Aside from helping your body replace lost energy, eating also helps prevent muscle breakdown and stimulates protein synthesis, FitDay.com notes. Eating fruits and yogurt post-workout also helps speed recovery and minimize soreness later. The optimum window in which to eat after working out is within 30 minutes of finishing. Doing so helps your body maximize the effects of the exercise routine and boosts athletic performance.

5 Best Workouts for Overweight Exercisers

Starting a new workout routine is hard for everyone, but it can be especially hard if you are overweight or obese. The health club environment can be intimidating and putting together a program on your own can be both uncomfortable and confusing.

But if you are heavy, exercise is important. Workouts will help you to lose weight, can help you to change the way you feel about yourself, boost your mood, improve your health, and make daily activities more comfortable.
So how do you get started? First, make sure that you are healthy enough for physical activity. Visit your health care provider and ask key questions about limitations or modifications that may apply to you. Then choose a workout that you enjoy enough to stick to. These five programs are particularly well suited for larger exercisers. See what interests you, and then use the tips to get started on a path to a leaner, fitter you.

5 Best Workouts for Overweight Exercisers

1. Walking

This seems like an obvious choice, but there is a reason that walking tops the list of the best exercise for just about everyone. Walking requires very little equipment and it can be done almost everywhere. Walking is low impact, improves strength and mobility in the lower body, and can be easy, moderate or vigorous depending on your specific plan.

Get equipped for walking by investing in a good pair of shoes. Visit a locally owned shoe store where a walking or shoe expert will recommend several brands and let you take a few out for a test drive.

Tips to start a walking program. If you are absolutely new to exercise, start by walking for just 10 or 15 minutes each day. Gradually add time so that you work towards one full 30-minute session. Don't worry about speed or pace in the beginning. Make consistency your goal.
As your fitness level increases, see if you can begin to increase the speed and intensity of your workout. Researchers have found that a moderate intensity can be achieved by reaching a 100 step per minute pace, or 3000 steps in 30 minutes. You may choose to invest in an activity monitor, but an inexpensive pedometer will count steps for you too.

2. Aqua Jogging

Water activities are particularly well suited for people who have painful joints or difficulty moving. But lap swimming is too intense for many people and water aerobics classes are not always available. A good alternative is aqua jogging.

Aqua jogging is simply running in the water with the help of a buoyancy belt. You get all of the benefits of running or walking without the impact. Compare Prices online to find a buoyancy belt that meets your needs. Then find a deep pool and begin jogging!

Tips to start an aqua jogging program. Your feet shouldn't touch the bottom of the pool when you aqua jog. This may seem counter intuitive, but you move forward in your lap lane only by moving your legs against the water. It takes more effort than you might imagine, so start slowly and increase the duration of your workout as you begin to feel more fit.

3. Group Exercise Classes

One of the best ways to stick to an exercise program is to develop a social support system. Group exercise classes are a perfect place to find friends. But you'll want to be sure you find a class that meets your needs.

Before you invest any money, preview the class by watching it first. Remember that it takes an overweight exerciser more time to move through certain movements so watch to see if the pace of the class is too fast. Also, watch how the instructor cues the choreography. A good teacher will give plenty of advance warning for movement or direction changes.

Tips to start an exercise class. Greet the instructor on your first visit. Introduce yourself and explain that you are starting a new workout program. By connecting with her, you send a message that you are open to feedback and encouragement. The instructor should provide extra guidance and modifications to make sure you are comfortable during class.

4. Strength Training

There are many good reasons to start a strength training program. But for an overweight exerciser, there are special benefits. Strength training can correct postural issues that may arise from carrying extra weight.  Strength training can also increase the range of motion in all of your joints. Finally, when you build muscle, you boost your metabolism when your body is at rest.

You can start lifting weights at home, but this is one instance where joining a gym or hiring a trainer may be particularly beneficial. You can use a single session with a personal trainer to learn simple exercises to get you started and show you technique cues that will help you to keep your form in good shape.

Tips to start a strength training program. If you join a gym, you might find that some strength training machines are not made to accommodate a larger body. Even if you don't hire a trainer, the gym staff should be able to show you how to adjust equipment or use alternate exercises to work each muscle group.
Remember to start slowly and don't do too much too soon. Consistency is the most important element of your new workout program, so the worst thing you can do is to overdo it on your first day so that you have to take a week off.

5. Tai Chi

Mind body exercise has become more accessible to the general public. Yoga, moving meditation and Qigong classes are easier to find. But sometimes they are difficult for overweight exercisers. Many balance-oriented yoga postures , for example, are difficult for people who are obese because they have a different center of gravity.

Tai Chi uses a series of flowing movements to increase range of motion in the joints and incorporate some (usually standing) balance postures. Tai Chi also incorporates meditational elements that help to decrease stress and improve your sleep to lose weight.

Tips for Starting Tai Chi. As with any group exercise class, you should preview the program before you invest money. Ask the instructor if previous experience is necessary and what accommodations can be made for a new exerciser. Also, ask about the location. Some Tai Chi classes take place in outdoor parks or nature preserves. You'll want to be sure you are comfortable exercising in a public setting before you invest.
Remember that the type of exercise you choose is less important than the fact that you are doing it. Don't be afraid to try everything on the list! Keep a journal to track your progress and be sure to check in with your physician if you are having difficultly maintaining the activity or if other symptoms arise.

Weight Lifting Workouts for Women

Most women who lift weights aren't looking to build rippling muscles. Rather, they're hoping to merely tone their body and lose weight. Do not perform a complete workout in one day. Rather, work your chest and back one day and shoulders and abs the next, etc.

Benefits

Weightlifting does not mean building enormous muscles.
Weightlifting is as important to overall health as aerobic exercise. It helps build stronger bones and increases metabolism. Muscle continues to burn calories even after you have left the gym.

Chest and Back

Tone your chest and back to achieve better posture and balance. The incline, decline and flat bench press, cable crossover and dumbbell flies tone your chest. Stiff-leg dumbbell dead lift, hyperextensions, bent-over dumbbell row, T-bar roll, lateral pull-down and pull-ups strengthen your back muscles. (Perform three sets of 10 reps each.)

Shoulders and Abs

Rid yourself of the excess fat on your shoulders and midsection. Tone your shoulders with the Arnold press, dumbbell press, dumbbell lateral raises and dumbbell rear row. For flat abs, perform plate twists and hanging knee raises (three sets of 12 reps).

Biceps and Triceps

Toning your biceps and triceps not only builds strength, but increases your satisfaction with your overall body. Perform hammer curls, dumbbell incline curls and one-arm preacher curls. For triceps, perform kickbacks, weighted bench dips and push-ups (three sets of 10 reps).

Legs

To tone your quads, perform barbell squats, walking lunges and leg presses (three sets of 10 reps). Perform Roman dead lifts, seated leg curls and lying leg curls to tone hamstrings (three sets of 12 reps). For toned calves, perform standing calf raises, donkey calf raises and Smith machine reverse calf raises (three sets of 15 reps).

The Best Workouts to Lose Weight Fast

When deciding to lose a few pounds, no one wants wait six months or a year to be slimmer. Workout programs that focus on attaining gradual results may be all well and good, but they do not reflect the real-world needs of dieters. Losing weight quickly is possible, but understand that you will have to work that much harder in the gym to accomplish your goals. If you manage to put in the effort on one of these rapid weight-loss programs, your reward will be getting a few steps closer to your ideal physique.

Escalating Density Training

  • One of the quickest ways to burn more calories in the gym, thereby burning more fat, is to increase exercise density. Exercise density simply refers to the amount of work performed during a given period of time. Understanding this fact, and that no one wants to endure two-hour workouts just to see results, coach Charles Staley has designed the EDT program for fat loss.
EDT workouts are 60 minutes long, dividing into three training blocks of 15 minutes each. The final 15 minutes are separated between the various sections to provide the body with a rest. During each 15-minute "block," you will be given a pair of exercises. Alternate between the exercises, taking rest as needed, with the goal of completing as many reps as possible during the time period. Each subsequent week, attempt to break your previous week's record. By constantly striving to force more work into the same time frame, your body will adapt by gaining muscle and shedding fat at a rapid pace.
A sample EDT workout might be:
    First 15 minutes:
    1. Step-ups with right leg
    2. Step-ups with left leg
Rest 5 minutes, then second 15 minutes:
    1. Incline dumbbell press
    2. Seated preacher curl
Rest 5 minutes, then final 15 minutes:
    1. Seated calf raise
    2. Russian twist

Tabata Method With Weights

  • The Tabata method is perhaps the fastest workout on the market. Yet despite this, very few people are performing Tabatas on a regular basis. This is because Tabatas will force you to work harder than you ever have before, stimulating rapid and sustainable fat loss. If you think you are up to the challenge, then this is the workout for you.
To perform a Tabata workout, choose one compound exercise that works multiple joints, such as the squat or push press. Choose a relatively light weight, because you will be performing four minutes of non-stop activity. Have a clock or stopwatch nearby, because time is of the essence. Alternate between 20-second periods of activity, during which you grind out as many reps as quickly as you can, and 10-second periods of rest. Perform a grand total of eight work-rest sets, then feel free to lie down on the floor and collect yourself for a few minutes while your body recuperates. Perform Tabatas at least three times a week for maximum fat loss. Just remember that while this system might look easy on paper, try it before you make judgments. But if you are willing to pay the price, Tabatas can take you to your ideal physique faster than almost anything else.

Longer Workouts Vs. Shorter Workouts for Weight Loss

The workout best for weight loss is the one that burns the most calories. This could either be a longer or shorter workout, depending on the intensity of your activity. The number of calories you burn during your workout is directly correlated to how long you’re moving. However, shorter sessions will burn more calories if you structure your workout in high-intensity intervals, which make them more efficient for fat loss.

Exercise and Losing Weight

  • When you’re working out, you’re burning a relatively high number of calories in a short amount of time. While you’re burning calories throughout the day, the calories that you burn during your workouts add to your daily total. When this daily total of calories burned is greater than the calories that you take in from what you eat and drink, you create a caloric deficit. Your body then has to break down fat that you have stored on your body to use as fuel. When you reach a caloric deficit of 3,500, you lose a pound of fat.

Longer Workouts

  • If you’re participating in low- to moderate-intensity cardio exercise, such as walking, jogging or biking, the longer you work out, the more calories you’ll burn. According to the American Council on Exercise, a 160-pound person will burn about 15.1 calories every minute she participates in running. That means if she runs for 30 minutes, she’ll burn about 453 calories, but if she goes for 60 minutes, she’ll burn about 906 calories. The more calories you burn, the more effective your workout will be for weight loss.
  • A shorter workout can be more efficient for burning calories than a longer workout as long as you structure your training session into bouts of high-intensity intervals. If you were to run at the same pace as you would when going for a jog, you’re not going to burn as many calories in a shorter session. However, if your workout consists of 10 sets of 100- to 400-meter sprints, intertwined with short periods of rest, although your workout will take less time than a jog around the neighborhood, you’ll be burning a high number of calories. The exact number of calories depends on a few factors, including the type of activity you’re doing, your body weight, and the number of intervals you complete. According to the American Council on Exercise, higher-intensity exercise burns a greater number of calories than longer, lower-intensity workouts and therefore is more efficient when trying to lose weight.

Impact on Metabolism

  • In addition to shorter, high-intensity workouts burning more calories than longer, lower-intensity sessions, they also make a positive impact on your metabolic rate. After you’re finished with workouts of high intensity, your body has to work harder to recover and restore energy storage. You continue to burn more calories during this time, even if you’re resting. This further contributes to the total calories you burn that day and thus helps you with your weight-loss efforts.

Treadmill Workouts for Weight Loss

Working out on a treadmill is one of the most effective ways of exercising, particularly for calves, thighs and glutes. There are many ways to get a great weight-loss workout using a treadmill, and they can be done on a treadmill at home, in a gym or even as walking exercises outside. Using a treadmill has the benefit of calorie counters, pulse rate monitors and adjustable settings.

Types

  • The most commonly used type of treadmill is a motorized home treadmill; these treadmills are plugged into a wall outlet and the tread moves electrically. There are manual treadmills that can be purchased, but these are much less effective in challenging, maintaining and monitoring weight loss goals.
Most modern treadmills feature a bar which the user holds while exercising; this bar electronically monitors the heart rate and speed of the user, as well as the number of calories burned during the exercise.

Time Frame

  • Most treadmill workouts last from 20 minutes to an hour, but it's always up to the individual to make sure their exercise is tailored to their energy level and schedule. Finding a workout that lasts long enough to get the heart rate up and burn some calories without overdoing the exercise is essential.

Exercising the Glutes

  • When working out on a treadmill, specific areas of the body can be targeted. Working with the glutes can be a challenge with other types of exercises. To work out and tone the glutes on a treadmill, plan to spend about 20 minutes walking or jogging at a speed between three and five miles per hour.
Many treadmills allow the user to change the percentage of incline; while walking, change this incline at a steady increasing rate every two minutes. Begin at a 5% incline and work up to a 10 to 12% incline. After 10 minutes, reduce the incline every two to three minutes until the workout is done. Repeat daily.

One-hour Treadmill Workout

  • To reach the fullest calorie-burning potential of a treadmill, hour-long workouts are ideal. Do these daily for the most effectiveness or a few times per week, as allowed by a busy schedule.
The first 10 minutes should be spent at a steady warm-up walk or jog of three to four miles per hour. Work up to a sprint of about seven miles per hour for about a minute. Spend the next 20 minutes alternating between a run of six miles per hour and a steady jog of five miles per hour.
Slow to a walk for 10 minutes, then begin alternating between a run and jog for 10 minutes. The last 10 minutes should be spent at a steadily decreasing speed to cool down.

Half-hour Treadmill Workout

  • For a mid-length workout, half an hour can do a great deal of good for weight loss and fitness. Plan to spend about 30 minutes on the treadmill. Spend the first two to three minutes at a steady walk to warm up.
Spend five minutes running at a steady pace. Do not sprint; run at a speed of five to six miles per hour, closer to a jog. Repeat both steps two more times, and finish with a slower cool-down walk of four to five minutes.
