The Benefits of Yogurt for Healthy Weight, Bones and Immunity

Yogurt is one of the healthiest foods one can eat. It contains some of the same healthy organisms that are found naturally in the body and it increases them - crowding out the less healthy organisms and even disease.

Known as "probiotics", these healthy bacteria in the intestine are "pro" or beneficial to the health of the body. Studies are showing probiotics can improve digestion, reduce diabetes, support weight loss, reduce cholesterol, boost the immune system and relieve allergies.

One study from the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that consuming yogurt or the beneficial bacteria from it, has promising health benefits for many conditions. Some of these include relief from constipation, diarrhea, inflammatory bowel disease, stomach bacteria infections and allergies.

A study on yogurt was published in the journal called "Archives of Osteoporosis". It reviewed the ability of yogurt to strengthen bones and found that milk and yogurt are the best dairy choices for increasing bone mineral density in the hip.

Yogurt has been found to assist weight loss. A healthy supplement similar to the acidophilus used in yogurt was recently found in a Canadian study to help overweight women lose weight and keep it off. It was discovered that the supplement made the intestinal wall stronger and more able to prevent inflammatory, obesity-causing substances from passing into the intestine and entering the bloodstream.

During the first 12-week period of the Canadian study, the subjects underwent a weight-loss diet. This was followed by a 12-week period aimed at maintaining their body weight. Throughout the entire 24 weeks, half of the subjects took two pills daily containing probiotics, while the other half received placebos. After the 12-week dieting period, there was an average weight loss of 8.8 pounds in the women in the probiotics group and 5.7 pounds for women in the placebo group.

The interesting difference is that at the end of the 12-week maintenance period, the weight of the women in the placebo group stayed the same, but the probiotics group continued to lose weight - a total of 11.5 pounds per person. Upon testing, these women demonstrated having a drop in an appetite-regulating hormone, as well as less of the intestinal bacteria related to obesity.

The Journal of Nutrition published a study on yogurt that found the people who consumed yogurt, especially those that used the live-culture form, had a decrease in allergic symptoms. Another benefit shown in this study is that those who didn't eat yogurt experienced an increase in cholesterol during the study, while those in the yogurt group remained stable during the course of the year.

The benefits of yogurt are best gotten from the plain, unsweetened kind or from capsules containing acidophilus or other beneficial organisms. Use it instead of sour cream or mayonnaise. It can also be featured on top of baked potatoes, in salad dressings, dips, smoothies and other foods.

Avoiding Getting Bulky Lifting Weights

A fear held by some people is that lifting weights will make them bulky, add unnecessary kilograms to their frame and make them "look like one of those people who just lifts weights all the time". This fear then leads people to avoid strength training, even though the benefits of this type of training are clear. In reality, getting bulky from lifting weights takes a reasonable amount of time and commitment, as well as the underlying genetics that give you a propensity to become muscly.

If you are one of the people who has avoided strength training because of a fear of getting too muscly or bulky, read on and learn why this may not happen to you, and ways you can reduce the odds that you will get bulky.

  1. Lift quickly - one of the biggest contributors to building bulky muscle is something called time under tension (TUT). In short, the main theory is that the longer the TUT, the greater the hypertrophy, or muscle growth. In part, this happens because moving weights slowly increases the engagement of slow twitch fibres, and the increase in cross-sectional area (CSA) of these fibres adds to bulk. To avoid this, reduce the TUT by learning to move quickly. This approach increases the engagement of fast twitch muscle fibres, which have less of a propensity to increase in CSA. A quick point has to be made here though - an increase in muscle CSA is actually required to increase strength. In fact, one of the first things that has to happen for strength to develop is for muscle CSA to increase. The increase in CSA changes the angle of the muscle fibres relative to connective tissue, and this change helps to produce the forces required to lift heavier weights. But putting all that aside, lift quickly and you'll reduce the chances of getting too bulky.
  2. Avoid excess calories - to build additional muscle requires surplus calories, particularly increased protein. If your goal is to increase strength, but not size, simply maintain a relative caloric balance, and the body will have a limited capacity to build additional muscle. It is important to ensure that sufficient calories are being consumed to meet daily requirements, or if fat loss is desired, reduce carbohydrate and fat intake but maintain protein intake.
  3. Train in endurance sports - there are two key signaling pathways that are activated in response to training stimuli - one pathway, known as the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), promotes muscle protein synthesis that ultimately increases muscle mass; the other, known as the adenosine monophosphate kinase (AMPK) pathway promotes the production of new energy production organelles (known as mitochondrion, produced in a process called mitochondrial biogenesis). When the AMPK signal is stronger than the mTOR signal, the body preferentially builds mitochondria, and down-regulates muscle protein synthesis. To up-regulate AMPK signaling, you simply need to engage in regular, moderate to high intensity aerobic training at a greater volume than any strength training. A word of warning here - the up-regulation of the AMPK pathway will ultimately limit how strong you can get, mainly due to the down-regulation of the mTOR pathway and corresponding reduction in muscle protein synthesis, so if strength is your key goal, be judicious with the use of aerobic training.
  4. Have the right kind of genotype - some people don't build muscle easily, some people do. If you're the former, you may not have much of a say in how muscly you get. Sorry. All you can do there is accept that you build muscle, use the other three strategies listed above, and recognise that there will be a pile of people who will be jealous about how easily you build muscle...

Strength training is incredibly beneficial for all people, irrespective of age, gender, lifestyle or performance goals. The fear of building bulky muscle can stop many people from engaging in an otherwise very healthy activity. If this fear has stopped you, you now have the tools to go forward and get stronger, without getting too big.

How To Lose Weight Fast Without Exercise, Simple Strategies To Ensure Healthy Weight loss

As we are removing exercise from the equation, the focus will now turn to diet and lifestyle factors. Firstly to be clear a diet is simply the foods that you eat on a daily basis. We are all on a "diet", most simply don't understand what diet means. Now as we want to lose weight without using exercise, we have to look very closely as the foods and drinks that we consume on a daily basis and the calories that we take in to ensure that are eating habits are aligned with any type of weight loss plan.

The first place that we should look at is the food groups that we are eating daily. To ensure healthy weight loss of around 1-2lbs per week, we want to be eating starchy carbohydrates, fruits and vegetables, healthy fats, and lean sources of protein like eggs, fish and nuts. Some of these foods are known as super foods and contain many vitamins and minerals which are essential for the body and help aid weight loss.

There are only 3 main food groups, carbohydrates, fats and protein. We do have micronutrients, but that is a whole other subject. We need to make sure that approximately 60% of the foods that we are eating are carbohydrates. Carbs are the primary source of fuel and energy for the body, so we need to make sure the body has enough energy for everyday activities. There should only be minimal fat from the foods that we are eating and the remaining will be protein, which will provide essential nutrients for growth and recovery.

So now we have established what the food groups are, we can now look at out "diet" to see what ration of food we are consuming in regards to food groups. This is important because we can identify if we are eating too many calorie dense foods which are high in saturated fat, or if we are lacking nutritional value from any of the food groups.

The best way to go about this is to simply create a food dairy. This can be a simple word planer or you could opt for a smart phone app, the choice is yours, but this has to be the first real step to keep track of what you are eating. A good practice is to plan your week ahead and divide up the foods that you purchase into the given food groups so that you can align your grocery list with foods that give you nutritional value and will help aid weight loss. This is very manageable with a little bit of planning.

Alternatively instead of writing down every food that you eat daily during the week, you could take pictures of the food that you eat and shoot a picture of the food label so that nutritional value and calories are recorded without writing things down. This is a good strategy for busy people.

Many studies have found that people who take pictures of the foods they are eating as a way of recording and tracking food intake found it easier to reduce and remove many of the unhealthy food choices that were on their diets. It is very easy to see how this works, not many people will be very enthusiastic about taking a picture of a greasy cheese burger and chips, over a healthy salad. This theory works well and saves time. It is all a matter of choice.

The next thing to look at would be the liquid drinks that you have daily and in the week. This is important as far too many people drink far too many sugary and carbonated drinks that have almost no nutritional value in them at all. These types of drinks are loaded with calories that will do no benefit to your waistline.

To lose weight we need to ensure that the right types of liquid drinks are in our diets. You should be looking to swap carbonated drinks and alcohol with pure clean water and health drinks like smoothies and shakes for added variety. Water can play a very vital role in any weight loss plan, and is especially important if there is no exercise in a person's lifestyle.

Water is a big player in these kinds of eating plans, because water will often fill the gap of hunger. If water is taken with a meal, there is less chance of over eating and thus reduces the chance of weight gain. Water will also help with the process of digestion and also flush out unhealthy toxins from the body to ensure a clean inside.

As mentioned the best way to add variety with drinks in a healthy eating plan is to throw a few smoothies into the mix. These are a great addition because you can get the much needed 5 fruit and vegetables a day and also they are a time saver. Many people struggle to get enough fruit and vegetables a day into their diets, smoothies provide the ideal solution.

The typical recommendation for healthy weight loss is about 1-2lbs per week. You should not look to lose any more than this. This is very manageable without starving the body of needed nutrients. To lose a pound a weigh per week, you need to reduce 3,500 calories from the diet that you have. This works out at a calorie reduction of 500 a day to keep in the healthy range.

Another common problem that many people face in today is that they are sitting around for long period of time in the work place. This can make it tricky to keep to a healthy eating plan without cheating. It has been proven in many studies that people who sit around for long periods of time eat more generally than people that don't. In this case, try to stand up and walk around whenever possible. A few other ways keep the weight from piling on, are to use the stairs instead of the elevator, walk instead of using the car, and walk the dog more often.

Overall the diet is the most important aspect of a weight loss plan, and since we are not exercising or training, this is especially important. It will take a bit of careful planning and commitment to get into the habit of recording the foods that you eat on a daily basis, but within a few short weeks, it will become a regular habit.

Healthy and Fast Breakfast Ideas for 2-Year-Olds

Mornings can be extremely hectic, especially for families with small children. It can be a challenge just to get everyone ready for the day, let alone trying to ensure your little ones are fed a healthy breakfast. Luckily, a healthy, kid-friendly breakfast doesn't have to be time consuming. A filling and fast breakfast should include healthy whole grains, muscle-building protein and vitamin-packed fruits in order to get your toddler's day off to a good start.

Peanut Butter Toast

  • Toast topped with peanut butter can be such a simple breakfast, yet kids will gobble it up time and time again. Choose whole-grain toast for the added vitamins, minerals and fiber. Top it with peanut butter, or any type of nut butter, which adds protein. To round out the breakfast, include some sliced fruit, such as berries, grapes or oranges. This breakfast favorite will take minutes to prepare, but is packed with nutrients and will keep your child satisfied throughout the morning.

Cereal with Milk

  • Cereal is a quick breakfast choice, and when you choose whole-grain cereal options, it can be nutritious as well. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends looking for a cereal with little to no added sugar, no trans or saturated fats and at least 2.5 grams of fiber per serving. As an added bonus, cereal can be a great on-the-go breakfast, as you can put cold cereal in a container and kids can eat it dry with their milk in a cup on the side. Instant or quick-cooking oatmeal is another fast breakfast option for chilly mornings. To add flavor, mix in diced fruit, applesauce or cinnamon. Oatmeal is great source of fiber and contains lots of iron, which is necessary for little growing bodies.
  • A filling and delicious smoothie can take minutes to make and can be enjoyed on the go. Combine fruit, fresh or frozen, milk and yogurt in the blender and mix until smooth. This combination will provide fiber and lots of essential vitamins from the fruit, and the milk and yogurt packs protein, calcium and vitamin D to help strengthen growing bones.

Eggs

  • Eggs are too time consuming for a busy family, right? Not when you can use the convenience of a microwave. Coat a microwave-safe cup with non-stick cooking spray, add an egg and a dash of milk, beat until blended and microwave for one minute, or until set. Top with shredded cheese and serve with a piece of whole-grain toast. Eggs are an excellent source of protein, as one large egg contains 6 grams. In minutes you can serve up a weekend breakfast favorite that will give your toddler tons of energy for the day.

Grab-and-Go Items

  • When you truly are left with no time to spare, keep healthy items on hand that can be quickly grabbed as you are running out the door. Some protein-packed options include individual yogurt containers or pouches, string cheese, hard-boiled eggs and single-serve milk boxes. Easy-to-eat fruits, like bananas, apple slices, berries or applesauce pouches make for great breakfast additions. Whole-grain crackers and low-sugar cereal bars or granola bars can round out the meal and provide filling fiber. Even if you are left with only seconds, having these items ready can ensure a healthy breakfast for your little one.

Does Gluten Make You Fat?

There's a lot of controversy out there regarding a gluten free diet. It's easy to be unclear about just what exactly gluten is, and whether or not a gluten free diet is right for you. While some people follow a gluten free diet in an attempt to lose weight, gluten itself does not make you fat. Contrary to popular belief, most people do not need to follow a gluten free diet unless they have an autoimmune condition called Celiac Disease.

What is Gluten?

  • Gluten is a group of proteins found in wheat, rye and barley that affects how elastic bread dough is, and how chewy the finished product will be. Composed of the proteins glutenin and gliadin, gluten causes inflammation, pain and digestive problems in people who have Celiac disease. Gluten can also be found in many condiments and household products, and can easily be cross-contaminated from one gluten containing food to another non-gluten containing food. Those following a gluten-free diet should look for certified gluten free products.

How Do We Gain Weight?

  • Weight gain occurs when we consume more calories (via food and beverages) than we burn during the course of our day. If this pattern of caloric excess continues for extended periods of time, we gain weight. The opposite is true as well. When we lose weight, it means we are burning more calories than we consume. Being in caloric equilibrium means that we consume the same amount of calories we burn, and therefore do not gain or lose weight.

Why Avoid Gluten?

  • People who have Celiac disease must avoid gluten. If someone with Celiac disease eats gluten-containing foods, it can cause severe inflammation of the small intestine. Since many foods contain gluten, a true gluten free diet can be difficult to maintain. However, when done properly, a gluten free diet can be very healthful and nutrient rich, as many whole plant based foods do not contain gluten. If you suspect that you may have either a gluten intolerance or Celiac disease, you should consult with your doctor.

Gluten and Weight

  • Though gluten-containing foods do contain calories, gluten itself does not make you fat or cause you to gain weight. You should not avoid gluten-containing foods specifically in order to lose weight. If weight loss is your goal, you should aim to be in caloric deficit, or consume fewer calories than you burn.

The Best Fat Burning Foods That Can Help You Eat Healthy and Look Great!

We all have a little extra fat that we'd like to lose. But why turn to unhealthy weight loss products or metabolism-busting starvation diets to ditch it? You can easily shed unwanted pounds by using healthy, natural food found right at your local grocery store or farmer's market. Check out this list of great foods that are not only nutritious, but help you get rid of fat the natural way.

The Best Fat Burning Foods That Can Help You Eat Healthy and Look Great

Avocados

The healthy, mono-saturated fat found in these green fruits help to plump up cell membranes and stimulate the production of hormones that burn fat. Eating an avocado will switch off the fat storage hormones in the body and boost the metabolism, helping you fight bad fats with good fats.

Eggs

Eggs have an abundance of nine essential amino acids that help your body build its lean muscle tissue. Since muscle burns more calories than fat, including eggs in your diet can help you get rid of extra pounds you don't want and replace them with muscle you do. Chop up an egg and put it on a salad, or just scramble and eat plain with some cayenne on top for extra fat burning potential.

Brazil Nuts

Brazil nuts are not only high in essential minerals but actively help your metabolism by converting thyroid hormones to active form and bind to toxins. This prevents the toxins being stored in fat cells and adding to the fat you already have. Eat a small handful as a snack as these can be high in calories.

Honey

Honey is actually great for burning fat and is included in many home-made weight loss drinks for this purpose. That's because honey uses extra fat deposits in your body to generate energy. Thus, eating a tablespoon of honey a day can not only help you lose weight, but actively reduce the overall fat in your body by burning it up.

Apples

Apples are full of pectin, which helps you feel full longer. But pectin also cuts down on fat absorption in cells, ensuring that the fat that you eat doesn't immediately get stored but instead slips through unnoticed. An apple a day keeps the fat away!

Chili Peppers

Chili peppers are a powerhouse when it comes to burning fat thanks to their high levels of capsaicin. New studies show that the capsaicin in chili peppers may turn white fat into brown fat. The significance of this is that white fat is fat storage and brown fat cells are thermogenic, burning stored fat. One more reason to make your meals spicy with these dynamic peppers!

Burn fat the way Mother Nature intended you to by eating these incredible, fat burning foods! Put these items on your grocery list and eat your way to a better figure and healthier life.
