3 Exercises You Can Do With An Adjustable Bench

When it comes to your workout program, getting in as much variety as possible is always a good thing. Not only will it keep boredom at bay, but it'll also help ensure you are constantly seeing progress. The minute your body gets bored with a workout is the minute you might as well stop doing it because you simply aren't getting any further results.

Finding new ways to make use of fitness equipment is one of the best steps to take to liven up your sessions.

Let's go over three different exercises you can do using an adjustable bench...

1. Step Ups. The first great move to start including is the basic step up. This can be done with just your bodyweight, holding a set of dumbbells, or with a barbell resting across your back.

What you'll want to do is simply step up with one foot, bringing the other leg up to match. Then step down, either with the same foot, or with the other. Then reverse sides and repeat.

As you do this, make sure you are constantly thinking of pushing yourself up with your quads and hamstrings, never leaning forward as you complete the exercise.

2. Tricep Dips. The next good move to add into your workout protocol is the tricep dip. To do this one, position your hands just off the edge of the bench, with your feet placed on the ground in front of you. From here, bend your elbows as you lower yourself down into the tricep dip. Pause at the bottom once your elbow is at a 90 degree angle and then press up again to complete the rep.

Continue on until all reps are completed. To advance this one, you can also place your feet up on another bench or an exercise ball.

3. Reverse Leg Raises. Finally, one last super move to start doing using an adjustable bench is the reverse leg raise. To perform this one, incline the bench and then position your body so you are resting chest down on the top portion of the bench. Your hips should be at the very end, legs on the ground.

From here, while holding onto the bench, lift your legs directly up behind you, squeezing your glutes. Lift as high as possible and then slowly lower down again to finish the rep.

Keep doing this until you feel a deep burning in the glute muscles.

5 Benefits of Resistance Training

Resistance training, strength training, weight lifting, or whatever other name it is known by, has a negative connotation in many people's minds. We're too quick to attach lifting weights to excessive muscle development observed in bodybuilders, or to the wrong kinds of people we meet in the gym. Sadly, the effect of this is that the people who need resistance training the most, people like you and I, end up missing out. And we do miss out - big time.

There are lots of benefits to resistance training, aside from just getting bigger muscles. Below, I've listed five of the ones most relevant to pretty much everyone.

Improves bone mineral density - as we age, the density of our bones decreases, which has the effect of increasing our risk of developing osteoporosis and suffering breaks from falls. While there is a big focus on the benefits of calcium for improving bone mineral density, one thing that is constantly overlooked is that bones remodel and rebuild based on external stresses. Resistance training is one of the most effective, if not the most effective means by which bone mineral density can be increased, held steady or rates of decline slowed. The benefits of this are transient, so ongoing loading is critical.

Improving metabolic functioning - we are currently in the midst of an obesity and Type II diabetes epidemic. The solution that springs to most people's minds is to change their diet, but this ignores how the body actually uses sugars. When sugar enters the bloodstream, insulin essentially runs around to muscles and asks if they want any energy - that's one of the key functions of insulin. When we are inactive, our muscles don't want much energy, because they are not using it, so the body converts the excess energy into fat. However, if we are active, and use energy stored in muscles, the muscles will take up sugar in the bloodstream. One of the most effective ways to increase the demand for sugar is to engage in resistance training, specifically trying to move as much weight as possible as quickly as possible. This approach engages fast twitch fibres, which will preferentially use sugars as fuel when trained correctly. Once the muscles have depleted their stores of sugars, the demand for replacement sugars increases - letting insulin do what it is meant to do.

Delays loss of muscle mass - as we age, we lose muscle mass in a process called age-related sarcopenia. The main effect of sarcopenia is that we lose our fast twitch fibres, and keep our slow twitch fibres. The result of this is that our metabolism slows, we lose muscle tone, and worst of all, our risk of falls increases. By undertaking regular resistance training, we can assist the body to maintain muscle mass and slow the rate of loss of our fast twitch fibres. In the long term, this helps us stay leaner, more toned and reduces our risk of falls. And the best part is that the benefits of resistance training are observed in all ages, irrespective of gender and the age at which training started.

Improvements in cognitive functioning - there is a trend to think of the people we see lifting weights all the time as being less intelligent than the rest of the population, but the evidence for the cognitive benefits of resistance training are mounting. There is evidence that regular resistance training can slow down the rate of onset of Alzheimer's and dementia, can improve synaptic functioning, enhance our capacity to complete complex tasks and reduce the risk of depression. All of these can happen just by lifting weights a few times a week.

Reduce the risk of illness - exercising on a regular basis can help to reduce the risk of illness, and in some instances can also help to reverse the effects of some diseases. In particular, there is a trend for resistance training to help improve recovery rates from serious diseases such as cancer and coronary heart disease. In addition to that, auto-immune diseases and disorders, including MS and AIDs can potentially be slowed down exercising with weights
So there we have it - 5 great reasons to rethink resistance training. The benefits listed here are relevant to all of us, because we all face the risks of loss of bone density, muscle mass, metabolic dysfunction, reduced cognitive performance and the longer we live, the greater is the risk of a chronic disease. The great news is that as soon as you start, you get the benefits. So don't wait any longer, get out there and get lifting.

Should You Use An Activity Tracker?

If you've been keeping track of the latest products to hit the fitness scene, there's no question you've discovered one or two of the latest "fitness trackers" now available.

What are these and why are they so beneficial? People everywhere are jumping on the bandwagon, picking up their choice of device.

Let's give you a brief overview of what you should know...

1. What They Are? These fitness trackers are basically small devices you wear on your body and will determine various fitness statistics such as how many steps you've taken, how many hours you're sleeping, how many floors you've climbed, and an approximation of how many calories you've burned.

Each tracker will offer slightly different metrics, so shopping around to find one that offers what you want to know most will pay off.

2. Will They Work? The question you might be now asking yourself however, is how accurate are these? Can you really rely on them?

The answer is yes and no. In a sense, they can be relatively accurate. Most are proven within about +/- 10 to 20% depending on the device, so they can give you a general idea of about how many calories you are burning.

For step counts, they do tend to be very accurate as they are basically just a pedometer.

The main thing to know though is they will not accurately assess calorie burn during certain activities such as cycling or weight lifting since there's no way to assess the calorie burn here. Ones that actually read body chemistry and have metal plates that touch the skin, may be slightly more accurate in this regard, but they will never be 100%.

3. How To Use Them Effectively. So if you want to use these, go ahead. Use them as a guideline only though. Still make sure you count your calories and track your body weight. Adjust as necessary. The tracker is better used as a baseline for measuring more active days with less active ones.

For instance, use it to help you reach a certain step count goal - 5000 steps for example. If you notice you're only at 3000 by evening, get up and do something to make up for the more sedentary day.

This over time can help you reach your weight loss goals faster and improve your health standing. For many people, they serve as an excellent wake-up call to see just how little you're actually moving.

3 Great Moves To Do With A Medicine Ball

Looking to create a home workout for yourself? If you aren't so keen on going to the gym three to five times a week and would prefer to exercise in the comfort of your own home, this is definitely possible with the right approach.

You don't even need all too much in the way of equipment to get in the exercises that can easily add shape and definition to your physique. One of the best pieces of equipment to consider using is the medicine ball which can be purchased for a cost-effective price at almost any exercise or fitness store.

Here are three great moves to consider doing with the medicine ball that will get you seeing strength gains...

1. Lunges With A Twist. Lunges are a great move to strengthen your entire body and now you'll be taking it up a notch.

Hold the medicine ball directly in front of your body and as you lunge forward with one foot, rotate your body to the opposing side with the medicine ball in hand. As you rise back up through the first lunge and move into the next, twist to the other side for the second rep.

Continue on doing this until you've taken 10 to 20 steps forward. Because of the twisting action, you'll now be calling into play your oblique and ab muscles to a much larger degree.

2. Overhead Squats. Another great move for hitting your lower body is the squat. To ramp up the intensity, try this overhead squat instead. Hold the medicine ball directly over your head, elbows extended. Once there, begin to squat back down, keeping this position the entire time. As you do this, go as low to the ground as possible.

This will call your core into play to a larger degree as well as it keeps you stabilized over your feet and, in addition, you'll also work your shoulders to a small degree when holding the ball over your head.

3. Sit-Ups With The Ball. Finally, to really hit your core, try sit-ups with the medicine ball. To do these, hold the ball into your chest and then bring yourself directly up into the sit-up position. Once you're there, extend your arms directly out holding the ball and now you can twist from one side to the next and back to center. As you reach center, sit back again, holding the ball into your chest to repeat the movement pattern.

You'll not only be adding additional resistance with this exercise, but you'll be hitting your obliques once again with that twisting movement.

So pick up a medicine ball and give these exercises a try. They'll provide added challenge, improving your overall fitness level.

The Six-Pack Myth

Have you been into a newsagency recently and seen the latest editions of the fitness magazines? Maybe you've been online and seen a promotion with a fitness model. If they are male, the fitness model definitely has a 6-pack, and if they are female, there is a good chance they will have one as well. There is usually a program or offer or article or video in which the secrets to this 6-pack are revealed. Did you know it is unlikely that you'll ever get that 6-pack? Did you know that the people selling the idea know this, and rely on you failing as part of their sales pitch? Crazy, right? I'm going to explain why this works.

Let's talk about the models first. They have impressive abs, no doubt about it! And if you read the article, they'll tell you that you can have abs like that too. The truth is a long way from there. Here's the rub - that model trains fulltime to look like that (for years), has great genes and actually spent the better part of 2-3 months getting ready for that shoot. That's right - 2-3 months of hard dieting. on top of the years of preparation training. To get those abs, the models diet to strip as much bodyfat from themselves as possible. They cut carbs and fat from their diets, do heaps of cardio, and even resort to dehydrating themselves for 24 hours before the shoot. Then there's the lighting, the photographer and all the editing software. They don't tell you about that in the article, do they? If you looked at that model 24 hours after the shoot, they wouldn't have abs that good.

For the average person on the street, those abs are unobtainable. If we follow the guidelines in the article, we might well see an improvement in the appearance of our abs, particularly if we were pretty close to seeing them or could actually see them before. It is highly unlikely that we'll wind up with abs like the models. At some stage, we'll give up, and go back to our normal ways. It's how our brain operates - we need success to motivate, and if we are sold on quick success, we also have quick loss of motivation. How do we get that motivation back? In part, it comes back to us in the form of another model showing us great abs on the cover of a magazine or on an advert or website. And off we go again.

So, why does this approach work? It works because it uses a very basic form of marketing - concept reinforcement. Every time we see a person with great abs on a marketing product, we are being sold the idea that this is both desirable and achievable. It's desirable, because every person with great abs always has an equally good-looking person near them, or is portrayed as "successful", or looks amazingly happy. See that enough times, and our brain is taught to conflate the two ideas into one - we are led to believe that good abs leads to success, happiness and a high level of attraction to potential mates.

It also works on another level - every time we see an image of a person with great abs, usually with a marketing by-line, we are being told that another person has been able to achieve this look. That way, when we fail, which they actually want us to and know we will, we are led to a conclusion that the fault lies with us, and not the product/marketing/program. It's a strange idea, but it works - our failure leads us to buy into the concept more, not less. It's not our fault; it's the marketer's fault for selling unrealistic ideas. But they do it, because they know it works.

So, how do we get off of this crazy roundabout? Well, first things first - we need to accept the reality that good abs don't mean you are fit and healthy. All that good abs shows is that you are lean and have good genes. Sure, training can improve the appearance of your abs, and dieting can definitely improve the appearance of your abs, but it doesn't automatically mean you are fitter, healthier or better than you were. Rather than focusing on your abs, it might be worth focusing on a whole pile of other markers of health.

There are a range of indicators of health, all of which have varying degrees of validity and reliability. For example, cardiovascular health can be assessed using measures of blood triglyceride levels, or blood pressure, or haemoglobin/ferritin levels, while lung function can best be measured using peak flow. For physical performance measures, there is a range of testing options available that can measure everything from flexibility to strength to rate of force development. All of these can be measured over time and compared back to the baseline; and that's something that your abs can't tell you. All of the health measures can be within healthy range without your abs being even close to visible.

At this point, it might be worth considering the types of body fat levels observed in elite athletes. After all, if there were a group of people who we would expect to have the "best bodies", it would be reasonable to assume this is that group. For most people, their abs become visible at about 15% bodyfat. Male Olympic swimmers typically have bodyfat levels between 10-15%, and many of them have poorly defined abs. Male elite level cyclists and marathon runners tend to sit at 8-10%, a similar level to female gymnasts. Elite rugby athletes are quite often around 18-20%, and some are even higher than that. It's pretty hard to argue that elite rugby players are unfit, and the athletes in the other sports target bodyfat levels for optimising performance, not health.

So, where does that leave you? On the one hand, you can buy into the slick marketing spin of supplement and publishing companies, whose sole purpose of existence is to make you believe that you need what they sell. Or, you can follow the true indicators of health, and recognise that a healthy body doesn't have a certain appearance, it has a certain function. That's not to say that you shouldn't desire a 6-pack; just that it won't make you healthier than the person who doesn't. Oh, and that whole appearance equals attractiveness myth that marketers use is pure bs - while we might initially seek that which is visually appealing, in the long term we seek that which is appealing on a series of levels. Be healthy, be happy, seek enlightenment and be a decent human, and your need for that 6 pack might just disappear into the ether, where it rightly belongs.

Could You Be Doing Too Much Cardio?

When it comes to exercise training, it may be hard to believe there's such a thing as "too much". After all, you constantly hear most people need to figure out a way to add more physical activity into their lives. Our sedentary ways are currently killing us slowly but surely, and this can only be reversed if we start getting up and moving more.

But for a select few individuals, this isn't the case. In fact, they may be doing too much aerobic exercise or cardio training overall, which will only set them up for serious problems such as injuries, overtraining, and lack of motivation for other things in life.

Wonder if you could be doing too much? Here are some sure-fire signs...

1. You Dread Cardio Time. The first sign is an obvious one. If you start to actually dread doing cardio sessions, you know something is up. While we all have those days where we aren't exactly thrilled to get into the gym for more cardio; you should never dread them.

At least not for more than one day in a row. If it feels like you'd rather clean bathrooms each time a cardio session comes your way, you know you're doing too much.

2. You Find It Hard To Do Any Activity. Second, if you start to notice doing any sort of activity throughout the day is tiring, this is also a sign you are doing too many cardio sessions.

Another telling sign is if your legs feel very heavy doing these tasks. If it feels like too much to even walk up the stairs for instance, it's time to rethink your workout program.

3. Your Heart Rate Is Lower. Finally, the last self-check to do to see if you might be doing too much cardio, is to look at your morning heart rate. If it becomes slower than usual, this is a sign your parasympathetic system may be taking over. This is more common in endurance overtraining than it is in strength overtraining - in which case your heart rate would be elevated.

Many look at a lower heart rate and think it just means they are becoming more fit, but really, this isn't the case. Be careful if you notice your heart rate lowering at a speedy rate as it may mean more is at play here.

So there you have the main points to be aware of and be on the lookout for when it comes to your cardio training program. Could you be doing too much?

3 Deadlift Variations To Try During Your Next Workout

One of the best exercises you can have in any strength training workout routine - is the deadlift. This exercise is great for building strength and power in your lower body and will also help improve your overall mental focus and concentration as it's no easy exercise to get through.

This said, if you routinely hit the gym and perform conventional deadlifts each and every time, you might be in need of a serious break. While there's nothing wrong with doing that if you don't get bored, most people need to mix it up a bit more.

The following three deadlift variations can help you do just that...

1. Sumo Deadlift. The first deadlift you can try is a 'sumo deadlift' which involves you placing your feet wider apart as you move into position.

This is going to help hit your lower back to a larger degree, and for some people can make the exercise a lot more comfortable to perform. Remember your own body biomechanics can often determine how good an exercise performs and how well you can execute it. So by adjusting a few factors, you can help overcome any awkwardness you might feel.

Moving to a sumo deadlift is one such example.

2. Deficit Deadlift. The next variation of deadlift is the 'deficit deadlift.' This variation is going to be great for pushing your boundaries as it takes your overall range of motion one step further.

When doing the deficit deadlift, you'll want to be sure you keep your core tight at all times and remember to never lock your knees.

Do these standing on top of a weighted plate or box in order to get that extend range of motion. And remember, never rush through this exercise. Slow and controlled is what you want here.

3. Narrow Stance Deadlift. Finally, the last variation is the 'narrow stance deadlift.' This one is great if you really want to hit your glutes to the full degree, building up those muscles while improving your strength and power.

It again gives a totally different feel than say the sumo style deadlift, so can be great for waking up your workout program and making you excited to deadlift again. Note you may not be able to use as much weight on this variation, so adjust accordingly.

Start integrating these three variations of a standard deadlift into your program and you'll be feeling - and seeing - the results in no time.

Exercises and Workouts - Try These If You're Bored With Regular Squats

As you move through your workout program, one exercise you absolutely must have in place is the squat. Few exercises are as beneficial as this "king" move as it's often called since it works so many muscle groups at once.

This said, after doing squat after squat after squat, boredom may set in. Like any other move in your workout routine, it's important you include sufficient variety over time.

Fortunately, there are a number of squat variations to be considered. Here are a few that you may want to try out at your next workout...

1. Sumo Squats. Want to firm those inner thighs? If so, the sumo squat is an exercise to consider. For this one, you simply stand with your feet slightly wider than shoulder width apart with your toes slightly turned out.

Squat down from there. You should feel the difference in the nature of stress being placed on the body almost immediately.

2. Front Squats. Moving along, next you can try front squats. If you are already squatting in a squat rack with a barbell, you'll be well equipped to transition into this one. Now, rather than placing the barbell across your back, you simply place it across the front of your body instead.

Lower down from there. Doing so is going to help to place more total stress on the quads versus the hamstrings when you do the traditional squat.

3. Jump Squat. For those who want to boost their speed and power, the jump squat is an excellent choice. This plyometric based move will not only build muscle, but burn massive calories as well.

Lower down into the squat and once you're there, rebound up off the ground coming up as high as you possibly can.

Upon landing, move right back down into the squat once again.

4. Goblet Squat. Finally, the last variation to consider is the goblet squat. This one works your upper body more than the basic squat, so is a full body move.

Simply hold a dumbbell with both hands directly in front of your chest in a vertical position. From there, with feet slightly wider than shoulder width, squat down until you're as low as you can go.

4 Commandments To Stick With In Your Workout Plan

Having trouble staying the course on your fitness plan? If so, you might just need a few guidelines to help keep you on track. Many people often struggle with going to the gym on a regular basis, but the great news is with a few smart strategies, you can overcome this.

Let's look at the four commandments you must remember if you want to become a regular at the gym...

1. Get A Plan. First things first, never start a workout without a plan in place. There are so many ways you can go about building your fitness level, so if you don't have a plan, you'll simply become overwhelmed.

Find a plan and then stick with it for at least 6 weeks. After that period, you can evaluate whether you want to continue with that particular plan or try something new.

2. Know Your Intensity Level. Next, know your intensity level. While it's great you are working out at maximum intensity, realize you cannot do this every day or you will get burnt out.

Vary your intensity level. Build into your program some easy and hard days so you are challenged but at the same time, are also able to recover.

3. Think About The Long-Term. It's also important when approaching your workout plan, you think about the long-term.

Don't view your workout plan as something to help you get fit over the next month. Think of it as a lifestyle change you will keep up for years to come. By shifting your thinking like this, you'll stand a better chance of choosing a plan you will stick with.

If you only view the short-term, you're more likely to choose plans that leave you frustrated and falling off the bandwagon.

4. Build In Some Fun. Finally, make sure you build in some fun. Fitness should never feel torturous or you know you don't have the right plan.

While you may not love every session you do, you should have at least one or two workouts you truly look forward to each week. Having this will help ensure you stay committed. Try a group sport or some other activity you remember loving when you were younger.

So there you have a few quick tips to help you become more consistent with your workout schedule. If you approach it in the right manner, you'll have a far greater chance of seeing the success you're after.

Why You Should Consider Kettlebell Training

One hot new workout trend that's hitting the mainstream fitness arena is that of kettlebell training. If you've never tried this training, chances are you've at least heard of it.

It's growing in popularity and offers a number of benefits. But, is it right for you?

Let's go over some of the basic facts to know about kettlebell training...

1. It's Fun. First, this type of training is fun. For this reason alone, it's worth most people trying it. Adding new tools into your workout program is one quick way to liven up the sessions, seeing faster results.

If you often find boredom gets you down, kettlebell training is one fast way around this.

2. It's Effective. Second, this type of training is also very effective. Most of the main movements done with kettlebells will require you to utilize a number of muscle groups in your body, which means you're getting a great strength building workout session.

In addition, this type of strength training is also excellent for boosting your metabolic rate, allowing fat loss to take place more effectively.

You'll notice your heart rate is elevated when training with kettlebells as well, so it's also a great way to get some cardio training in.

3. It Requires A Base Level Of Strength. One thing you do need to know about this form of strength training, however, is it will require a high level of base strength.

If you are brand new to exercise, you may want to start out with some weight machines first before "graduating" to kettlebell training. This will help ensure you are not putting yourself at risk for injury and your body is able to tolerate the weight loads being placed upon it.

Anyone who's been lifting weights for 2 to 3 months should feel comfortable to move into kettlebell training.

4. It Should Be Supplemented With Dumbbells. Finally, one last thing to know is you should supplement your kettlebell training with dumbbells. There are some exercises that simply don't work as well with kettlebells, so using dumbbells for those can come in helpful.

For instance, performing lateral raises with kettlebells will place excessive strain on your wrists, so dumbbells would work better here.

However you look at it though, you have much to gain and not much to lose by trying kettlebells, so if you're involved with strength training, make sure you give them a try.

How Quickly Will You Detrain If You Stop Exercising?

If you've been working hard at your workout program for quite some time, you might be wondering what will happen should you choose to stop. Will you lose all your progress? And if so, how fast will it go?

People come off their workout program for a variety of reasons. This could be due to injury, due to traveling, due to being ill, or simply due to life events taking up their time.

In any case, it's helpful to know what will be taking place in your body during these times so you can mentally prepare for it.

Let's look at some key things you need to know will occur if you stop training...

Your Cardio Fitness Ability. Between strength and cardio conditioning, cardio conditioning will be the first to go. You likely won't see much decline in fitness after a week off from training but beyond that, you'll definitely be noticing you don't quite feel the same as before when you return.

After about two months away, you'll have lost most conditioning, unless you were extremely conditioned to start. Consider yourself starting back at square one after this amount of time off.

Your Strength Level. Next we have your strength level. Your strength will be slightly slower to go and you'll maintain it quite well up to around 2 weeks away from the gym. Beyond that, you'll see some slight strength declines taking place.

Keep in mind the level of these declines will depend on what you are doing in your everyday life. The more strength based activities you are doing, heavy lifting for example, the less of a loss you'll see.

The key is keeping your muscles feeling stress being placed on them, so if you do that naturally in daily tasks, you won't lose much strength.

By about 6 months away from the gym, your strength will be down considerably and you'll need to start from fresh once again.

Do remember though muscle memory is a very powerful thing and you'll find regaining lost strength is easier than getting it in the first place.

Your Muscle Mass. You also might wonder about your muscle mass. Will you lose muscle? You'll lose muscle and strength at different rates depending on what you do. For instance, if you focus on eating right, eat sufficient calories and protein, you'll see much slower muscle mass loss than you will see in loss of strength.

Only after about 2 to 3 months, while eating a good diet, will you begin to see your muscles starting to atrophy. If you are on bed rest however, this process will take place much faster.

Your Ability/Mind-Muscle Connection. Finally, note you will lose your mind-muscle connection and agility very quickly. Even after one week off you'll find when you come back to your sessions, you aren't feeling as you normally did. Your balance might be off and your lifts just won't feel the same.

The good news is this element comes back very quickly, so it shouldn't take long to start feeling like yourself again.

3 Things You Can Do To Control Hunger

Dieting to lose 20lbs or even 5lbs can be difficult if you're having constant food cravings and hunger pains. Follow these tips to control your hunger and maximize your success!

1. Protein, Protein, Protein

Lean sources of protein such as chicken, fish, turkey, etc. are great at helping you satisfy your hunger. It is an important macronutrient that you should try to include in every meal and snack that you eat throughout the day. It is good for you and will help you stay fuller longer! Aim for at least 15-20 grams of protein in each meal, more if you can.

2. Water filled foods

You can trick your body into thinking that it is full by consuming foods with a high water content. Think of your stomach as a container, if you eat foods with a high water content, the water will take up more space in your stomach causing you to feel full. Therefore, you should aim to more leafy veggies and fruits such as melons, pineapples, and berries. They are not calorie dense, but they have so much water that they will fill you up fairly quick.

3. Fluids

Just drink more water! You should be drinking water already for its great health benefits, but it can also aid you in your weight loss journey. Try drinking a glass of water before each meal to fill some of the space in your stomach. It will cause you to eat less, but you will not feel deprived of food afterwards!

Just a side note for my readers. Losing weight is something that can be difficult for a lot of people, but just like anything worthwhile it takes work to achieve. Just keep your head up and always keep pushing forward.

The only way you can really fail at losing weight or achieving any goal for that matter is if you completely give up. There will be mishaps and mistakes along the way, but in the end you are the one that is in charge of your destiny and your results.

Find what motivates you and what inspired you to lose weight in the first place. Keep this in your head the entire time you are on your journey. Especially keep it in mind the days that you struggle and hit bumps in the road.

You will be so happy you stuck with it in the end, let's get to work!

How to Find Time for Exercise

Juggling work, kids, me-time and running errands all in one day can become a daunting task. This sometimes leaves you feeling exhausted and stressed out. You know a great way to combat this stress? Exercising! Getting your body up, out and moving is the perfect way for you to de-stress and unwind.

Yeah, yeah working out sounds like a great idea... if only you had the time, right? Well, in between being your kids' personal taxi, working at the office and finally brushing your hair for the first time all day at 7 p.m., you CAN find ways to fit in a little exercise during your day! While it may seem impossible, there are several different ways your body can get the physical activity it needs, even while completing some of your important tasks you've got to get done.

While we've already identified that exercising is good for relieving stress, regular workouts offer many other great benefits as well. Exercising helps you maintain or achieve your goal weight, get a better night's rest and it gives you that extra boost of energy you need to get a lot done on a busy day.

If you want to feel better about your health, adding regular physical activity to your lifestyle may be just what the doctor ordered! Below are eight tips for you to sneak in additional physical activity throughout your day, even if you often feel "too busy" to find the time.

8 Tips to Get More Time Each Day for Working Out

1. Turn Your Travel Time into A Workout: Whether you're on your way to picking up the kids, or stopping by the neighborhood coffee shop, try swapping out your car for your legs! Turning your commute into your own little workout can be the first way to sneak in some extra exercise during your day.

2. Multitask: Don't feel guilty about hopping on that treadmill! While walking on the treadmill can be a little boring, try using this time to catch up on a good read, or drafting a work email. Just because you're getting some exercise, doesn't mean you can't be a little productive as well!

3. Get the Family Involved: Take your kids with you on a walk or jog around the neighborhood. Physical activity is good for people of all ages and you can turn everyday together time into a workout!

4. Plan an Active Date with Your Partner: Your significant other won't see it coming when you suggest a friendly game of bowling, a bike-ride or volleyball instead of your classic dinner and movie date night. This is great way to keep your relationship spontaneous while secretly sneaking in some exercise!

5. Schedule Ahead: If you have the time early in the morning before work or before the kids wake up, try using this time to work out! Set an alarm and get your day started off on the right foot with some exercise.

6. Lunch Breaks Call for Fitness not Food: Instead of taking your hour-long lunch break at the table, try using this time to walk the stairs or stroll around the block. You can still eat during this time, but getting your body moving during this break will keep you feeling more motivated and energized.

7. Forget the Elevators: Anytime you find yourself looking to go up floors, simply use the stairs rather than riding idly in an elevator or escalator. This simple swap will get your body moving in the right direction.

8. Incorporate Strength-Building into your Routine: Push-ups and sit-ups are easy to do just about anywhere, anytime, and it doesn't take long to realize major benefits and to build up strength. Find ways to incorporate strength-building exercises into your weekly routine and you'll maintain your muscle mass and burn more calories.

These eight tips mentioned above are great for transforming a sedentary lifestyle into a physically active and productive one! And as always, it is generally a good idea to talk with your doctor if you are starting a new exercise routine after having been sedentary for a long period of time. Some doctors also provide helpful information about weight loss and exercise.

Even though we all have busy lives filled with priorities and tasks, there are ways to find those extra minutes for a little workout. These moments of exercise don't always have to be filled with walking however. When you've got the time, try mixing up your workouts to include some light strength training and flexibility exercises like yoga. There are so many ways to get in a great workout that you have lots of options to choose from. And keep in mind that even adding a few minutes of physical activity into your busy day can make a real difference in your health and well-being.

Exercise for Women Over 50

There are many exercises for women over 50, but success is based on the ease of integration into your lifestyle and the social benefit. Almost all health and diet programs will involve some exercise. But, you have to get something positive out of the experience or you won't have the determination to continue. This is why most new years resolutions to exercise are short lived.

When I taught the psychology of eating in the weight reduction program, we would always pair people to exercise. Pairing was the social support needed to establish and maintain an exercise routine. They would encourage and prompt each other to keep the motivation going as they eventually became exercise buddies.

According to WebMD(1), "Exercise is so potent that it influences every physiological system in the body for the better. They don't provide the long list of all the benefits, but mention, "The first benefit of exercise for women is reduction of the symptoms of menopause". This includes hot flashes, joint pain and poor sleep, which can all be improved.

WebMD recommends the following after your doctor clears you to exercise:

AEROBIC EXERCISE: Aerobic means requiring oxygen from continual movement for at least 20 minutes that can be walking, cycling, aerobic classes, running, dancing, swimming, and cross country skiing. Your heart rate should stay elevated and you should try to break a sweat.

ANAEROBIC EXERCISE: This refers to strength training from calisthenics and/or lifting weights. We naturally lose muscular strength as we age. This helps "maintain bone strength, reduces risk of lower back injury and keeps you tone." They don't discuss a specific weight program, probably because each person should have an individualized routine.

STRETCHING: This helps your flexibility and joint movement. It can help reduce injury and soreness. Yoga and Pilates are suggested forms.

IF YOU ARE NOT EXERCISE ORIENTED: In my experience, the best exercise for ease and maintainability is simply to walk or bicycle. With walking,
1. You don't feel like you're exercising since it's already a routine activity.
2. You really don't need any special or expensive equipment.
3. Including people will bring social enjoyment.
4. But, it can be done alone or in a group.
5. You don't need to drive anywhere to walk.
6. You simply measure your workout with a watch or step counter.
7. You want to walk at least 150 minutes a week or 5 walks at 30 minutes each.
8. You can add hand weights to increase your heart rate.
9. The ease of walking allows you to continue into advanced age.
10. Forming a walking or cycling group in your neighborhood is one of the most successful arrangements for sustainability and enjoyment. So, let's be creative and have fun today. L. Johnson

Do You Know The Benefits Of Kefir?

As a person who understands the benefits the Hay Diet has on the digestive system I found it difficult to ignore the apparent amazing effects which kefir has to offer.

It is clear that commercial kefir does not come close to the benefits the home-made variety has to offer as commercial Kefir is made from either a freeze dried powdered form of the culture which means it has considerably less healing power.

On the other hand homemade kefir contains billions of friendly organisms per millilitre, and the organisms are reproducing right up until the kefir is consumed along with ample amounts of kefiran and variations of the polysaccharide.

Kefir benefits from an abundance of tryptophan which is one of the essential amino acids and is, well-known for its relaxing effect on the nervous system. Therefore kefir has a particularly calming effect on the nerves. Rich in the B Vitamins: Kefir is an excellent source of Vitamin B7 (biotin), which aids the body's absorption of other B vitamins, B1 (Thiamine), B2 (riboflavin) B3 (niacin), B6 (Pyridoxal phosphate), B9 (folic acid), and B12 (cobalamin).

As an experiement the bacteria E. Coli was injected into Kefir. Within 24 hours the E. Coli was destroyed by Kefir whey's beneficial bacteria. Kefir has also demonstrated the ability to kill H. pylori infections when bacteria alone could not. In addition, the complex micro flora of Kefir has also shown a keen ability to greatly stimulate our immune system, ward off infections. This is because when Kefir is consumed as a drink, it creates a healthy mucous lining in the colon, which acts as a good medium to support the growth of beneficial bowel flora which helps to prevent parasitic infections and cancer as well as constipation. This means Kefir is beneficial in preventing many gastrointestinal disorders.

20 of the known health benefits of live Kefir

Sneak Exercise In Your Daily Routine

Exercising was a mortal enemy of mine; I hated it and I'm pretty sure it hated me because it caused me so much pain and anguish every time I tried to make it a part of my life. Not only was the actual act exhausting, but everything leading up to it was so inconvenient and each step just gave me an excuse not to take the next. For instance, I had to purchase workout clothes and shoes; then before I went to work out, I had to undress then get re-dressed in these clothes, then I had to bundle up (in the winter), find boots, gloves, hats, coats, etc. then warm up the car and drive to the gym; the preparation alone made me want to quit! Even in the summertime, thinking about all of the steps and then possibly getting to the gym and my machine was taken, also psyched me out. I had to figure out a way to a healthier, slim body without all the drama!

The first thing I did was decided to try to do some working out in my apartment. My daughter and I decided to do some aerobics, but we lived on the third floor and I was always worried about the tenants below us complaining, so we would do it once or twice a week, mostly on the weekend, for only a few minutes. This was actually pretty fun, but wasn't enough. I still needed to figure out a way to get enough exercise to put a dent in the amount of weight I wanted to lose. The next solution, which worked best for me was to literally exercise all day here are some ways I did this.

  • Every morning after peeing, I would do twenty leg lifts.
  • While I brushed my teeth, I did squats
  • Each time I went to the restroom during the day, even in the stall at work, I would do 20 additional squats and leg lifts. (you have to get the larger handicap stall for this)
  • If I were cooking, I would put the food on the stove; do a few sit ups on the kitchen floor, get up and continue cooking. A few times doing this while cooking a meal adds up!
  • Whenever I went home, I had to walk up three flights of stairs, this alone was decent exercise, but every once in a while, I would just go back down and do it again, nothing to strenuous, but it did make a difference when I added it to my other spurts of exercise during the day.
  • When walking from room to room, I would sometimes do lunges
  • I am not going to tell you that I would lay my driver seat back a bit and did sitting crunches while driving, because it's not safe, but if I did do it for a 5-10 minute trip to the grocery store, I bet it would help my abs tremendously.

There are so many other exercises you can do while going through your day. This worked best for me because it took out all the preparation; I didn't change my clothes, I didn't even think about it as working out, I did the tasks, in whatever I was wearing and kept the day moving, and it really worked!

A Colon Cleanse - What Is It?

There are different types of colon cleanses. Various forms of the same use oxygen, therapeutic clay, fiber, diet, and herbs. The first type mentioned, oxygen, helps dissolve matter that is stuck in the colon. It helps loosen it and eliminate it. Another type of cleanse uses bentonite clay, a type of therapeutic clay, which absorbs toxins, but also may absorb certain medications. A third type of cleanse uses fiber products which can be mixed with juice and swallowed. Fiber increases bulk and becomes an internal broom, sweeping the intestines. Also, fiber can help feed beneficial bacteria in the colon. Sometimes full or partial juice fasts are used. The reasoning is that the energy normally used in digestion now goes to helping cleanse the system. However, sudden changes can be hard on the system, and it is wise to talk to a professional about this.

People may start thinking about colon cleanses when they experience constipation. Constipation is a frequent problem in today's culture because of all the processed food. Processed food does not have the fiber that natural fruits, vegetables, and whole grains have. Because of this, there is not enough intestinal fiber to sweep the intestines clean. People then turn to stimulants designed to increase peristalsis, which is the contraction and movement of the intestinal tract. However, continued use of stimulants can result in dependence upon them as well as electrolyte depletion. Therefore, a better to approach colon health is with a diet that includes fiber, and also with colon cleansing supplements that do not deplete and weaken the intestines.

Lack of colon cleansing can provide accumulations which become homes to parasites or bad intestinal flora. It is believed that colon cleanses can help with constipation, and also reduce the chances of colon cancer, due to the fact the intestine is keep cleaner. Signs a cleanse may be needed are constipation, headaches, loss of appetite, and fatigue. A colon cleanse helps clean the intestines of toxins which are behind these negative feelings.

There are disputes between the holistic community and the medical community regarding colon cleanses. As with all things, a careful examination of the language being used and whether a comparison of apples with oranges being done is needed. Any concerns should be directed to your health professional. It helps if the health professional is educated in the fields of nutrition and holistic health. The popular support to colon cleanses by those who have experienced them indicate that on a popular and personal level, people enjoy the sense of internal cleanness and lightness they experience.

Finally, an important part of any colon cleans is to drink lots of water. As the toxins leave the body in urine and feces, the body needs more water to replenish the liquid lost. Good, clean water is important during a colon cleanse.

A Healthy Grocery List Should Consist of Some of These Foods

To address any health issue, or to take control of your own health is one of the best decisions you can make. Although there is this thing that is confusing many people, which is outdated nutritional advice promoted by organisations and health advisers. It is important to raise awareness of the inaccuracies in the current guidelines that we're being told are best for our health. There are many of the inherent health issues that come with consuming a low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet that's still promoted. Leading scientific research is proving, that a diet full of saturated fats is the best kind of which are found in many natural foods such as olive oil, coconut oil, nuts, seeds, fruits like avocados, wild caught seafood, pasture-raised free-range meats, just to mention some. Scientific research is providing that a diet full of saturated fats helps to balance the body's overall functions. However, do not confuse this with trans fats that are found in processed and take away foods.

In making the first step to take control of your health, the first starting point is food, diet, exercise, and personal care products. Learn to know which food to avoid and which type of food to include in your diet, be active, do some exercise, and avoid as much as possible the chemicals in your personal care products.

To get a quick result start with a body detoxification which will make you feel better and get some energy flowing through your body. You're going to feel exuberant and youthful, your skin will improve and start glowing, as well feeling more at peace with yourself. Body detoxification is not just beneficial for the body, it is also rejuvenating the mind. It is a physical, mental and emotional transformation. Body detoxification is best primarily through two ways: Exercise and a proper diet. Exercise may include walking, yoga, trekking, hiking and other floor exercises. However, exercise is best complimented with the right diet to get efficient and complete detoxification. A detox diet essentially comprises of wholesome foods which are natural, tasty and have good nutritive value. Before you go shopping, make sure to make a healthy grocery list. This is an excellent habit to start as it allows you to plan your meals in advance and also to create a desirable balance in your diet.

Making a Healthy Grocery List!

A great way to go about forming your healthy grocery list is to avoid fried and packaged items as much as possible. These foods have no or very low nutritional values, are high in sugars and trans fats, the wrong calories, high in sodium and preservatives. Such types of food promote the growth of free radicals in the body. Free radicals are atoms with a surplus negative charge. These react with oxygen in the body and cause the body to age faster. Vitamin A, C and E are known to mitigate the process of aging as by reacting with the free radicals and therefore preventing them from oxidizing. Thus, foods which are high in these vitamins are known as antioxidants. Therefore, a diet rich in antioxidants is indispensable for effective detoxification of the body.

When you go shopping, these are some of the foods for your healthy grocery list: Fresh vegetables. Make fresh vegetables your best friends and you will hardly suffer from another disease in your life. Many people don't realise the unlimited benefits of vegetables. They are full with vitamins, minerals and are also high in fibre. Besides of all that they keep you full for a longer time without compromising on calorie intake. Some of the best vegetables are tomatoes, carrots, beet roots, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cucumbers, green beans, squash etc. Also make sure to include a healthy dose of spinach and other dark green leafy vegetables; they are all high in iron.

Fruits and Other Foods! Fresh fruits:

Citrus fruits such as oranges and grapefruit should definitely have a top priority in your healthy grocery list as they contain the elusive vitamin C. Watermelons, apples, grapes, mangoes, bananas, papayas, are all an excellent source of vitamins as well as carbs. Sure, some fruits are sweet but they are way better than eating cookies, pastries, candies, and other sweet stuff. The sweetness in fruits comes from the natural sugar they contain which is healthy. Although if you have a diabetes issue you may have to watch how much fruits you can have. Just one more thing on fruits: The peel or skin of oranges and citrus fruits has also high qualities of vitamins and other benefits, which most of the time is not used. The same applies to apples. There is lots of goodness in the skin but better still, the pips or seeds in the middle of the apple can have just as many if not more health qualities as the apple itself. Make sure to crunch the seeds or pips before swallowing. Other foods such as pulses, lentils, beans are a must have on your healthy grocery list as they serve as an excellent source of protein as well as fibre. Chick peas, beans etc. make a tasty addition to any salad! Fish and other sea foods are full with proteins and they also contain the important omega 3 fatty acids. However, some of these foods are high in calories and are best consumed in moderation.

Nuts are high in fats but they are good healthy fats; also some vitamins are fat soluble and thus is best to include small quantities of fat in your diet. It is best to avoid meat when on a detox diet, especially red meat. However, you may include lean white meat such as chicken breasts as they serve as an excellent source of protein. Always poach or bake meats instead of frying. Meat stock can also be used for preparing soups. If at all you use oil than opt for a high quality olive oil as it is high in monounsaturated or 'good' fats. As well make sure to get enough liquid, such as filtered water in between meals, not with your meals. Green tea is an excellent source of antioxidants and negligible in calories.

What is a Short Workout?

A short workout is a 10-30 minute exercise routine designed to assist a person in becoming more limber, in better cardio shape, and/or stronger. Nearly anyone can squeeze in 10 to 30 minutes in their day. A routine that lasts 30 minutes or less can provide significant health and fitness benefits, and many surveys today indicate that fitness benefits begin to decrease after 30 minutes of continuous exercise. Many believe that short bursts of high intensity exercise are the key to the success of short workouts. High intensity is relative, however, and many folks just starting a fitness routine should ease into the program. Checking with your doctor before beginning a workout regimen is a very good idea.

Interval Training and Short Workouts

Interval training is measured and timed intervals of more intensive exercise, and slower, less intensive exercise. Cardio exercises lend themselves well to interval training especially in short workouts. Body weight exercises, such as calisthenics, push ups, pull ups, and stepping, can also be performed in high and low intensity intervals.

They researched 10,000 people in Denmark and found that breaking a sweat while participating in short duration workouts could reduce the risk of metabolic syndrome (a cluster of risk factors for diabetes that include things like belly fat and high blood pressure) by up to 50 percent. Casual walking for more than an hour didn't have much of an effect. They determined that when it comes to heart disease, diabetes and obesity, the best advice is, if in doubt, sweat it out.
